The exotic bamboo furniture is quite familiar in Asia, since Bamboo is a common plant that grows abundantly there. In Java, Indonesia, traditionally bamboo has been one of the options for home-making materials, various household appliances, decorative items and functional support (curtains, walls, floors, etc.) for home interior, and furniture.
Particularly for furniture, the use of bamboo is very promising, especially in terms of bamboo furniture design that can be quite varied, easy and very likely to develop: from the traditional style, the classic touch of various different cultures, to the minimalist and modern design.
In general, there are 159 species of bamboo plants that grow in Indonesia, some of them are: apus bamboo, petung, wulung and a very special is tutul bamboo. Now, tutul bamboo (Bambusa maculata) is extremely rare. A characteristic that would not be forgotten is a random pattern of spots on the bamboo rod. This pattern reminds us of the random pattern of spots on a leopard fur. It is a quite interesting analogy of leopard fur which is associated on a piece of bamboo. Thus the term of tutul bamboo was created.
Actually, at first glance the young tutul bamboo is green like any other. However, when observed more thoroughly, there are spots all over bamboo rod. If the bamboo is old enough to be cut, its basic trunk color will be yellow, while spots appeared with its distinctive brown contrasting color. The random pattern of brown spots all over bamboo rod is the primary typical of its uniqueness!
As we know, a lot of furniture is made by accentuating its natural color and figure. There are black and brown natural-colored wood materials, some are more attractive by strengthening and giving assertion to the wood fiber pattern. While in this tutul bamboo furniture, the pattern of brown spots can become decorating and sweetening elements. Yet, tutul bamboo which is naturally very enchanting has become more perfectly integrated with rattan accent.
Maintaining the origin color and texture on tutul bamboo makes the easier and simpler finishing, requires no staining, natural, the most addition of other materials just need varnish to giving glossy effect while keeping the color from easily fading. And the result, by some miracle you already have furniture with the exotic color, texture and pattern that meet the aesthetic standards, and even very artistic!
In Java, the traditional furniture made of bamboo is common. Lincak Pring is a general term which means bamboo stools. The seat is elongated to load several people, in accordance with the typical of Javanese communal life, like to hang out and relax with the neighbors and friends.
Traditional form is still maintained for the application of tutul bamboo on furniture until today. Previously, lincak pring was a lounge chair without backrest. Now, plus backrest is worth being called a contemporary couch. The forms that are more individual and modern also created, and continue to develop dynamically. There is no limit to the creativity of the designers. Even the American-European designers could share the ideas on design developments with the touch of classic and modern from different cultural backgrounds!
